A Repository of Essays and Opinion Papers Addressing Issues in the United States of America

Of Politics, Politicians, and Campaigns '08

Your assessment of Senator Obama is quite accurate! His strenth lies in his committment to the American people, not to the special interest groups who are the chief beneficiary of the policies of the Bush administration. His education and intellect are abreath of fresh air compared to the individual who currently resides in the White House. More importantly, his vision for America and its role in global politics is sorely needed in this post 911 climate.

Your evaluation of the relative importance of the "experience factor" as a qualification for election to high political office is quite revealing. I would make two additions and a correction to your list of the results of having "experienced" candidates elected (or selected) to the presidency: First, the IRAC War was waged based on a faulty premise, that being the existance of weapons of mass destruction. Second, when you referenced the natonal debt, it should be noted that it is now in the trillions. When discussing the experiece factor as it related to the Bushes and Clinton, Bush 1 served only one term of four years as opposed to eight as stated in your paper.

I would also suggest that more attention be given to Senator Obama's ability to relate to the people of the Middle East, particularly the Arab World, which be crucial if we are ever going to lessen or eradicate tensions in that region.

Illegal Aliens Do the Work Americans Won't Do

It's obvious why illegal aliens are the labor source of choice in this country - its cheap. That's why the current administration wants to make them legal. However, your paper puts the issue in historical perspective by citing the negative experiences suffered by African-Americans at a time when they provided these services despite meager wages, virtually no collective bargaining, lack of dignity, etc. It also provides solutions that, should they become public policy, would go a long way toward solving this problem and its damaging impact on our economy. - Posted 07/19/2007 - Entry Number 2

Illegal Immigration

It's my opinion that we need to stop enabling illegal immigration. First, if it was against the law to rent an apartment or sell a house to an illegal, the motivation to come here will diminish. If we make it against the law to hire an illegal immigrant, the motivation diminishes, as well.
The American people will always do the work if enough money is paid. The reason Americans won't do the work Mexican's do, is Mexicans will do it very cheap.
So, stop the social programs for non-citizens, stop renting homes and apartments to non-citizens, stop hiring them they have no reason to come here. If they really want to come, become a citizen.
Bottom line, remove the benefits of being here and they will go back to their own country. - Posted 08/05/2007 - Entry Number 3

Sen. Obama and Sen. Clinton

I enjoyed reading your thoughtful and insightful comparative analysis of the leadership skills of Senators Clinton and Obama as they seek the Democratic nomination for the presidency of the United States. Senator Obama is right, communication with world leaders, both friend and foe, is essential if we are to ever make substantial progress toward international cooperation, which may someday result in achieving the lasting peace that we all desire. I also agree with your position regarding Senator Obama's decisiveness on issues related to foreign policy and his willingness to openly state his position regardless of any perceived political risks. This is the kind of honest and decisive leadership that has been conspicuously absent from the Oval Office. - Posted 08/07/2007 - Entry Number 4

Why did / does our government allow illegals to collect welfare !?

This is what I have asked myself over the years .. I think if we want to stop them from coming over here illegally, then maybe we should try to help and teach the Mexican government how to run their country so that people can earn a living in their own country ... I am living in Tucson and I have noticed a HUGE increase in illegals since Jan of this year .. They dont speak a word of english and dont work and have 3 small kids or more .. They buy hundreds of dollars of food at a time and pay with a food stamp card .. How do they get it ? I thought you had to be a U.S citizen to qualify .. There is also a huge number of Africans that have been transported here without knowing a word of english and they also get a huge handout from our government .. They arent in school or working and they have a litter of kids also .. I work very hard as a cashier in a major grocery store and see this and it makes me feel like my own government abandaned me ... I dont like this world's leaders anywhere or the insane and moronic way our government attempts to govern our country .. Our freedoms and rights are slowly being taken away from us and we just let it happen without raising a voice .. While we are given more laws to abide by ... - Posted 08/10/2007 - Entry Number 5

Illegal Aliens do Work Americans Won't Do?

I read your article and it struck at the heart of common sense. America businesses have found a new set of slaves...but have gotten politically smarter this time around, wielding powerful words like 'Racism' and 'Better Lives for their Families' to scare any real questions away. - Posted 08/18/2007 - Entry Number 6

Obama

Obama is a tortured individual who believes his blackness allows self deprecating whites to purge racism from their consience. Common sense must mark Obama as dangerous.

Help the American's....

This is a issue: What about the people of the United States that are losing home's day after day due to a law that gives the Tax people the right too sell their home. For the reasons of not paying the taxes. Of which my come to about 4,000 dollars for taxes when the home is worth 50,000 dollars. In the State of FL, they sell to the public certificates after the 3 certificate it become the property of the person who bought the certificate. Which may consist of 4,000 dollars. I say the law is stealing from hard working people. Who can't afford to pay their taxes. Of which when they bought their homes they pay taxes onces. It's like buying a dress and paying ten time's more than what it's worth. Further more when is the American public going to receive the minmuim wage like all other's (In which I'm speaking of those who are on disable (Adult's) and Social Secruity Income maybe more citzens were paid more you might not have such a problem with Health Care. After all they say this is America... - Posted 09/04/2007 - Entry Number 8

FREEDOM

I have read the so-called "responses" and it is obvious that many people do not understand the basic premise of our great country. It is FREEDOM !!! We are being INVADED by a bunch of illegal aliens! Don't you all see this? I am sick and tired of you all going on and on about how we had slavery and we mistreated folks in our troublesome past, and this and that! Some dumb large breasted commetator said "everyone in the world has the inalienable RIGHT to live in the United States!" Honest to GOD! No.... everyone does NOT have the right to live here! We are Americans! We are being INVADED and we better fight for or freedom or we are not going to have it much longer! - Posted 09/06/2007 - Entry Number 9

Illegals and Laws

43 Years ago I Immigrated to America.I could not speak a Word of English. In order to become a proud Citizen of the United States,I first had to report every Year my where abouts for 5 Years. In the 5 Years,if and when I returned to my Homeland it had been required of me,to first see the IRS;who attached a receipe to my Passport for prove, that I did pay all Taxes due.I also had to see a Doctor, who given the required Shots, then Dated and sign the required Healthbook,I had to carry with me as proof that I am not a Carrier of any disease. To become a Citizen,we had to Study, the Laws of this beautyful Country, where Tested by a Judge of our Knowledge and then where rewarded the Citizenship...I could never understand, why perfect Laws where changed, but noticed that some Politicians are in a habbit to change Laws, for the conveyance of more Votes and more Money in to there Pockets.43 Years ago,Laws had to be obey it,by Rich and Poor,Regular Citizen or Top Executive a like..I am a very proud American, but feel very sad in the last few Years to watch my fellow Citizens how blind they have become to the going on of .This Land is your and my Land.Open your Eyes America, fight back before it is to late.Study your Politicians, read about there past. One of our past Presidents made me cry and sad, every time he stood in front of OUR SOLDIERS GRAVES.To me it was an Insult to our BRAVES who died for OUR FREEDOM.I have watched Illegals being Escort out of a place of Business in Chains. They had been let go the same Day,to await Trial. What a Joke..It did accomplish, the Jobs where given to Legal Americans.Greatfully they taken the Job,many claim,Americans would Not do.WAKE UP AMERICA....Illigal..in TRANSLATION:AGAINST THE LAW..And watch out for ALL those new Laws.Do we now except Laws of the Communist? Our Soldiers who have Died for our Freedom and are still doing so right now, deserve better then this..GOD BLESS THEM ALL and all Legal Americans and AMERICA - Posted 09/10/2007 - Entry Number 10

New Health Care System for the United States

Leave well enough alone. It seems to me too many people are always trying to eliminate every bit of inconvience in the lives of people. All these proposals may be well intentioned but let's face it. Anything the government is involved in is going to be more costly and less efficient, simply because there will be no incentive to keep cost down, and service and treatments will be cut for the purpose of saving money. Also, is it going to be a sliding scale according to income. If you make a certain amount of money, do you have to pay a percentage of the cost? Anytime the government is giving money, it becomes a handout and we the people suffer because we don't get what our money worth. I believe the majority of people are either covered by their jobs, and if they work for an employer that does not offer benefits, they have made a choice to either stay with that employer or not purchase health insurance for their family. I don't know why we care so much that people choose to drive SUVs, have cell phones with all the latest bells and whistles, lap tops, designer clothes, etc... But don't want to sacrafice those items for what is essential. If the government starts trying to mandate health insurance what we will see is that people who have money will have the best doctors. No doctor is going to go to school for all those years and be in debt when they graduate to go work in some government mandated health care system that won't afford him/her the type of career and compensation that they sacraficed to obtain. - Posted 09/12/2007 - Entry Number 11

Of Politics, Politicians and Campains 08

I don't know that Obama should be President, but he does have the right to run for President. The President of the United States, should be someone who has the country's best interest. Not a Parties interest and not personal aspirations. I don't want to see another Bush or Clinton for sure. However, I want someone who is going to lay out specific ideas and visions for the future. I don't know that someone who wants to have tea and crumpets with the enemy is right for the job either. The only problem we didn't have before Bush was IRAQ. I don't know where you people get off blaming Bush for everything that has happened. If it were not for the Democrates bashing him so much for every idea he came up with, maybe they could have worked together and came up with some solutions. He certainly showed a willingness to work with Democrats. But proverty, AIDS, Health Care, Deficits, etc... didn't just show up during the Bush Administration. They've been here for years. - Posted 09/12/2007 - Entry Number 12

Sen. Obama and Sen. Clinton

Yes, Obama says he will talk to other world leaders, but he hasn't said what he's going to talk about. I don't think anyone ever said you shouldn't talk to other leaders, but that's usually if you have something to talk about. I don't think Bin Laden is a legitimate leader of a government. Therefore, what is there to negotiate with him about. He says he wants death to the infidel's and for us to convert and accept Islam. Since he is no official legitimate leader, I see no reason to negotiate with him and what will Obama negotiate. Usually when you sit down with someone there is compromise of some sort. There's nothing Bin Laden could offer me that I'm interested in. - Posted 09/12/2007 - Entry Number 13

Playing the Experience Card

Let's get one thing straight! You have no experience for President unless you've already held the position. I don't care what job any of these candidates have had. None of them can prepare them for what they will embark upon as Pesident. Look at all the past Presidents. They go in with black, brown hair etc... and leave with white hair. Being the President is no easy task. You have no loyalty among members of your party in the Senate or Congress, you have a large number of countries who really hate us but want our money and assistance to deal with, and a country full of citizens who think they have all the answers but yet can't take care of their own problems without government assistance. I'd rather have someone who is Loyal, Patriotic, rational and critical thinking, decision maker, and most of all someone with the guts to stand up and be firm when America's interest are at stake. - Posted 09/12/2007 - Entry Number 14

illegal aliens

this is suppose to be the land of the free. if we were in some of these countries these illegals are from we would do the same thing. we shouldnt be judging anyone we should try to understand and help them. this country was built on illegals. if it wasnt so hard to get green cards and visas then we wouldnt have this problem in the first place. wouldnt it be better if we let them get visas to work? at least then we would know who is in this country. im not saying let everyone in do background checks and if they have a criminal history dont give them a visa or permit. - Posted 09/13/2007 - Entry Number 15

Illegal Aliens do the work Americans won't do.

The only reason that Americans won't do the work that illegals are doing is that due to wage cost pressures, crop growers and sweat shop manufacturers are unwilling to pay proper wages
to Americans to do the work. Americans will work! Just pay them a reasonable wage for their
labor. This financial pressure is due to the fact that the American consumer is spoiled by the
"low prices" offered by major discounters, etc. Americans need to understand that the cost of maintaining public assistance to these illegals far exceeds the savings on retail goods. The
potential cost in tax increases to support these illegals is leading to a crushing-cost on our economy. Wake Up America and smell the Taco Sauce! - Posted 09/20/2007 - Entry Number 16

Illegal Aliens Do the Work Americans Won't Do

This is not a true statement. Even if that were the case, the government should be giving this work to the non-security threat prisons and have the prisoners earn their way. This would save taxpayers money and keep the "cheap labor rates" that the large corporations are striving to keep the Illegal immigrants here for. This should take care of the problem so we can send the illegal immigrants back to their homelands and save our from the overcrowding and pollution! - Posted 09/28/2007 - Entry Number 18

Let medical people make health care decisions

I agree whole-heartedly with a market driven health care system for the following reasons:

1. It rewards those who are productive, creative, intelligent, and resourceful (take a long hard look at societies with socialized health care, and see that there are few if no medical breakthroughs)
2. It maintains the highest quality of health care in the world
3. It would be environmentally friendly (save not only a tree, but a forest...)
4. The end the reinforcement of those "personnel" who get paid full-time salaries and benefits who contribute nothing to care of patients
5. By competition between providers to gain and retain patients, keeps medical professionals responsible to quality of care (without having a multi-layered bureaucracy of non-medical people to keep professionals "accountable")
6. The system would be clear to those who practice medicine and the the patients who seek services within the system - Posted 09/29/2007 - Entry Number 19

Is this why the homeless problem in America so bad ? The Americans that need work are out worked by the illegals. When you are hungry and sick and have no place to call home. It is also called " Depression" How can you feel good about that situation? I cant understand how the greatest country in the world can embrace people that dont even belong here and neglect its own. Proposal For a new Health Care System for the United States

I have lived through the original implementation of the national Health Service in the UK, later service in Canada and for the past years the medicare service here in the US. First let me say that as an old man of 85 with numerous medical problems I find the present Medicare system here in the USA for seniors is in most respects excellent. The Canadian medical service for a working man as I was then, from my experience lacked care and concern.
Perhaps much of the problems can be seen from my experience when the Health Service was originated in the UK. In those days my wife was a nurse at the local hospital and we knew personally many of the younger doctors. Generally those who decided to join the HNS were the type of doctor that I would want to look after me. Those who did not join were generally more interested in the rewards than the well being of their patients. The program initially went very smoothly but remember that this was before the days of a great deal of very expensive systems, CAT scan,s etc and as the cost of treatments rocketed but the money available did not, inevitably the service fell behind in many ways
Now in the UK, Canada and many other similar medical systems it takes months to get treatment if the condition is not criitical. Generally critical problems are seen promptly, but from every report the lack of cash is the limiting factor. Here is the USA our costs are high, but with the cash available the treatment is fast, effective and generally excellent.
So the problem falls down to one simple factor. where is the money coming from and who is going to pay for it. - Posted 11/24/2007 - Entry Number 23

Illegal Aliens Do theWork Americans Won't Do

Illegal aliens can afford to do the work cheaply because of all the aid we give them. Stop giving them any aid of any kind and they won't be able to live on the cheap pay they get. Then they will go back where they came from and the businesses now hiring them will have to hire Americans and pay them decent wages. We win every way you look at it. - Posted 11/25/2007 - Entry Number 24

government help for illegal aliens

people that believe that illegals get food stamps know very little as to how the system works. Some illegals are more educated and know and care more about this country than some real americans. Yes, they work for less money and work harder, but not to take an american's job, but to do what americans do not want to do. Without their work, this country would not be the same, we owe them, and the least we could do , is give them the amnesty and allow them to do what they are doing legally. - Posted 11/26/2007 - Entry Number 25

illeal aliens do the work americans won't do

Absolutely right! When the immigration issue hits the pocketbook and friuit and vegetable prices hit the 3 dollar mark Americans will be screaming to bring in the Aliens. For years the United States has been bringing in Mexicans when it has been to the advantage of the U.S. Just take a look at Arizona's Copper history. - Posted 12/10/2007 - Entry Number 26

Clinton, Obama the bad guys

Sen. Obama is an inexperienced, albeit charismatic, young statesman. About 10-15 yrs. from now when he is a seasoned veteran polititian, he will be ready to take on the Washington insiders. One must remember, very little can be accomplished in a presidency when you have made enemies of all the Congress. No matter what the president envisions, nothing gets done without working with 'the old boys club'! Hillary has learned much in her years in Washington and in the last several years working with the members of Congress. She does possess the knowledge and savy to deal with the Congress and also mend the relationships with countries around the world that have been so damaged by the Bush administration's policies. - Posted 12/24/2007 - Entry Number 31

dialogue with world leaders

I could not agree with Dr. Frayser more. The fundamental role of leadership is to establish a shared vision (hopefully a progressive one) and to train and prepare members of the organization (in this case the citizens of the US) to participate in achieving that vision. Given the history of the US, all past definitions of Bad guys and good guys will have to be revisited, or more accurately dismissed. In other words, the President or his envoys should try to engage in a dialogue with all nations. - Posted 01/21/2008 - Entry Number 35

Proposal for a new health care system

I have read your paper and do agree with what you have suggested. When you say get rid of medicaid and medicare, do you mean just redo how these work? Also, when you say that providers should get rid of getting paid x amount of dollars for y amount of patients and be paid based on the number of patients seen, do you think this will take away from the quality of care? - Posted 04/29/2009 - Entry Number 38

Approaches to Homelessness in the United States

I am of the opinion that we, America, provide each "legal" citizen 12 years of education. I am willing to pay taxes for that process and I enjoyed the benefits of that process. I am not responsible for the millions of kids who choose to skip school, sell drugs, join gangs and thus not partake of the educational value of 12 years of school.

We have created a culture of lazy people who rely on government assistance from the day they are born until they die. This is ridiculous. It is the liberal side of the government that pushes this agenda. The more social programs given to lower class people, the more votes they retain to push this agenda.

Does anyone not believe that it is the working class of people and business owners who pay for these social programs? As more and more social programs are created, more and more taxes are levied, more and more businesses collapse, and more and more people succumb to the social programs.

So, to your point in your paper titled, "Approaches to Homelessness in the United States" I totally agree with your premise of providing shelter for the homeless at no cost to the public, but I disagree with your introduction using all the rhetorical stories of violin players and streets of LA. Here is why. Did you not know we have tax-payer provided bus systems, subway systems, government housing, food stamps, emergency rooms, shelters, churches, minimum wage, welfare, county assistance and food banks? Have you ever wondered why the government provided housing in New York, LA, Chicago, Detroit are all destroyed, bug infested, and full of crime? We the people provided all those items, brand new and shiny. The people who received these items destroyed them, not me. I helped pay for them.

In closing, this is a complex problem, full of politicians, greed and laziness. I would love to see a social program to catch those who fall, I am just not willing to pay any more. - Posted 09/06/2009 - Entry Number 40

I’m writing to pass along some very good news regarding my daughter Lindy. Her biopsy revealed that the nodule on her thyroid is benign. I can’t tell you how much your thoughts and prayers for Lindy has meant to me. That day I met you in the book store, I felt that God had sent an angel to give me a message of hope. You were that angel and I will never forget our first meeting. Speaking of meeting, I hope you will allow me to buy you a cup of coffee the next time I visit Carly in Peach Tree City. In the meantime, I wish you and your family well and look forward to seeing you again soon.
